rTMS Treatments

rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is a non-invasive form of neurostimulation requiring no anesthetic and no systemic side effects.

It is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and other conditions, such as anxiety, PTSD, OCD, addictions, and pain.

Here are 4 advantages of rTMS when compared to other treatments:

rTMS is used to treat a number of psychiatric conditions, such as depression, OCD, anxiety, and PTSD. FAQ'S

In patients with depression who have failed multiple antidepressants- 30-40% can have remission (be completely free of depressive symptoms) and up to 60% can have some response (their symptoms improve). The efficacy may be higher in non-treatment-resistant patients.

Recent systematic reviews do confirm rTMS to be significantly beneficial in anxiety disorders and PTSD. rTMS is FDA approved to augment OCD treatment.

In addictions and chronic pain, early research indicates that when rTMS is added along with treatment, as usual, people are more likely to be sober or have less pain in follow-up.

Most people tolerate rTMS without any significant side effects and unlike antidepressants, rTMS treatment for depression will not cause weight gain, nausea, dry mouth, or decreased sex drive. etc.

Side effects are generally mild to moderate and improve shortly after an individual session and decrease over time with additional sessions.

They may include:

• Headache
• Scalp discomfort at the site of stimulation
• Tingling, spasms or twitching of facial muscles
• Light headedness

Very rare and uncommon side effects can include:

• Risk of seizure during treatment (1 in 1000 theoretical risk)
• Risk of mania in patients with bipolar disorder

Feel free to contact us about any concerns or other questions.

Generally, an index course of rTMS is 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Each session is typically 5 minutes in length. However, some sessions can take up to 25 minutes.

If you respond positively to rTMS your doctor may recommend you do maintenance rTMS to reduce your relapse risk. Maintenance rTMS treatment regiments can vary- it can be 2-3 days of serial treatment a month or once weekly.
